The Future of Commerce is Fast-Tracking: A Review of Shopify Reunite

Shopify Unite was established in 2016 and has provided an opportunity for Shopify partners from all over the world to come together, share ideas, and explore the future commerce.

We made the difficult decision to cancel our annual conference in person due to the growing public health concerns about COVID-19. To protect our employees and partners, we rushed to meet these new challenges for independent businesses.

This was also an opportunity for us to rethink how best we can serve our merchants in this time.

The result wasReuniteThis is our first ever livestream event for merchants. Shopify's leadership team shared their vision for empowering merchants for the future, which is coming sooner than anyone expected.

Financial products that can help you control your cash flow

Every business needs cash flow. It is difficult for founders to access the funds they require when they need them, due to many traditional banking products.

Shopify Capital has a different approach. No paperwork and no credit checks are required. Once you are approved, offers will be based on the sales history of your store and made available within days. We have funded thousands of businesses across the US, UK and Canada, with amounts from $200 to $1 Million.

shopify balance

Reunite announced a new way for simplifying your finances with Shopify Balance. Shopify Balance is a business account that can be used as a card and a business account. Shopify Bala provides entrepreneurs with access to financial products that will help them start, grow, and run their business.

Orders can be delivered faster and for less money without compromising the customer experience

Shoppers are more inclined to shop from local businesses. Local buying allows customers to obtain the products they desire with shorter fulfillment times and save money on shipping costs.

Local pickup allows businesses to continue selling at their brick-and mortar locations, while offering customers safe and convenient ways to pick up their orders. We're introducing curbside pickup and local delivery in an effort to help more retailers bring customers to their stores (or curb) via the internet.

  • Pickup at the curb:Curbside pickup is now available. Customers can pick up online orders in-store or curbside. You can also customize the pickup instructions for each retail location.
  • Local delivery:Merchants from all countries will soon be able offer a simplified and improved local delivery experience. You can define a local delivery area by using postal codes, zip codes, or radius. Also, you can set local delivery fees for your products and minimum order price. With the Shopify Local Delivery App, you can simplify local delivery for your customers. You will receive shorter delivery routes and notifications that give you peace of mind.

Shopify Fulfillment Network (SFN), is also getting major upgrades. To make it affordable for Shopify businesses to have two-day shipping, we're creating a network to warehouses. SFN is available for businesses that ship between 10 to 10,000 orders per day to the United States. To get access, apply today.

Reunite attendees had the opportunity to meet Chuck, one our collaborative robots who are improving efficiency in SFN warehouses. Chuck can be reached through the interactive AR demo.

You can reach your customers wherever they are using sales channels

Satish Kanwar (VP Product, Shopify) stated that "if there's one thing Shopify isn't short on it's channels." Customers can find your products wherever they're at, online, offline, via search engines or on their mobile devices.

Reunite has a recap of the channels that we have recently launched and some updates to existing channels.

  • Shopify POS - All-New: Shopify POS was rebuilt to help brick-and mortar businesses reopen or open their stores in a modern retail environment. We are working on more updates, including contactless checkout and a "see What's In Store" feature, which allows shoppers to see what's available in their local stores and then choose the fulfillment option that suits them best.
  • Shopify Email:Email is still one of the best ways to reach customers via a channel that you control. Shopify Email has been integrated with Shopify Email so that anyone can send and track gorgeous branded emails. It's totally free until October 2020.
  • Shopify Ping Android:Shopify Ping, our free messaging app, helps businesses make personal connections by allowing them to have real-time conversations. Shopify Ping is currently available for iOS. Soon, Shopify Ping will also be available for Android. Ping is also available to staff members. This allows them to communicate with customers and share their knowledge with each other over chat.
  • Facebook Shops:People all over the globe rely on Instagram and Facebook to find new experiences every day. Recently, we partnered with Facebook to offer Facebook Shops to Shopify merchants. This new shopping experience allows you to create a branded shop that lives within the Facebook and Instagram mobile app.

It's easier for any business to go online

We are being pulled towards the future quicker than we could have ever imagined. Every business has become an online business because of necessity. We make it easy to get your business online regardless of industry.

We've added gift cards to all plans, along with curbside pickup and local delivery. This is to assist affected businesses in obtaining short-term cash flow relief via gift card sales. Reunite also announced two additional ways that we are empowering businesses to pivot online. They are both now:

  • Merchant tippingOffer your customers the option to tip a percentage or a specific amount at checkout. The experience can be customized to include a range of tipping options. These could include collecting donations or thanking delivery drivers.
  • Express:Express is a Shopify theme that allows restaurants and other food and beverage companies to create an easy online store in a matter of minutes. We hope that these businesses will be able to move their sales online as quickly as possible thanks to our new tipping options and local fulfillment options.

Local domains and other features that offer localized experiences globally

Selling internationally means creating shopping experiences that are familiar to cross-border customers. We shared some of the ways that we help sellers create localized experiences while they grow their international business.

  • Local DomainsOur domains feature is expanding to allow merchants to create local domains with their own country, currency and language. Local Domains are a great way to expand your business and reach different regions of the globe. They allow you to tailor your online store to meet the needs of international customers.
  • Shopify Payments now supports 133 currency:Now you canSell in 133 international currenciesShopify Payments allows you to reach international customers by displaying product prices in the local currency.
  • Exchange Customized:Soon, you will be able create custom pricing rules that convert your prices into local currencies. This will allow you to offer more transparent pricing to your international customers. This will allow you to have greater control over the price of your products, which will make it easier for you to market and advertise. All Shopify Payments merchants will have access to this feature in the coming months.

Faster load times and a new dashboard for store performance

Customers value speed. Slow loading times frustrate customers and can negatively impact your store's ranking in search engines. Shopify was built to be responsive, and we are constantly improving the speed of your store .

We are currently rebuilding our online store engine in order to speed up load times. Some stores have already loaded up toFaster than twice the speedThis engine can be used to power the engine. It is currently being rolled out to Plus merchants but will be available to all merchants before the end of this year.

A new dashboard for Shopify's online store performance will be available. It gives you a clearer view of your shop's performance so you can see how recent changes have affected page speed. This feature will be available for all users later in the year, but only a few merchants will get it first.
