The Characteristics of Good Home Pages

The home page is an integral part of any ecommerce site's overall success. The home page sets the tone for all other pages and is often the first page that visitors return to to familiarize themselves with the site. Its purpose is to attract visitors' attention, provide clear direction and offer multiple options to drive them further into the site. Here are four key characteristics of home pages that are successful.

1. Clearly displays an offer. Make sure to give the sale prominence if it is a monthly sale. To really get the message across, add urgency. Use words such as "today" and "limited time" to persuade the visitor to act quickly or risk losing the chance to avail the offer.

2. Include a clear call-to-action. This encourages the visitor to take action, such as to support sales, new products or daily features. A banner with information about the month's sale and the text "shop Now" in the lower right-hand corner of the image would be an example of a call to action. You can also sign up for the newsletter or add an item to your cart. Each micro action should include a call-to-action that supports the end goal.

3. Clear and precise navigational paths for accessing site content. They simply provide navigation without considering how it will be presented or the impact it will have on their visitors. Do not try to be cute or quirky. You should provide the user with both traditional navigation elements and inline text links within your site copy, which will lead to the same end points.

4. Multiple ways to access the same information on the site. Every visitor searches for products that meet their needs. However, each person may search in a different way to find those results. While one visitor might use the main navigational elements of the site's framework, another might prefer to read more before making a decision.

This is an example of a store selling beach clothes. The site is visited by two different people, each looking for the exact same product. The first visitor will be on vacation for the next few weeks and is searching for a beach outfit. The second visitor is a local resident and is searching for the same outfit. A heading that states "outfits to vacation" might be more appealing to the first visitor, while the second visitor may prefer categorical navigation that simply states "bathing suits".

A home page that drives visitors deeper into the site is essential. It must be able to communicate with each visitor in their language. This is the first impression visitors will have of your website. Make it interesting and clear.
