Receipt printers are critical point of sale hardware which are used for printing sales transaction records. There are a few distinct kinds of receipt printers available in the marketplace. Impact, or sequential dot-matrix printers, are initially cheaper to buy -- but you should also buy pins and ink ribbons, which add up over time. While thermal printers are a bit more expensive, they are faster and quieter.

What is the difference between impact and thermal printers?

Thermal printers create a printed image by selectively heating thermal paper (receipt paper) as soon as the paper passes over the thermal print head, turning black at the regions where it is heated. Two-color direct thermal printers are capable of printing both black and another color (often red), by applying heat at two distinct temperatures. Since the newspaper is heat-sensitive, there isn't any need to buy ribbons. Thermal printers have a more defined print, are quieter, and are usually about seven times faster than other printers used in point of sale systems.

Impact printers rely on a forcible impact to transfer ink to the media, much like a typewriter. Unlike thermal printers, impact printers need ribbons that could come in one-color or two-color formats. Two-color formats are usually used so the system can print in red for modifiers. Impact printers can also manage multiple copies of paper using carbonless copies so that there are two to three copies for each printing.

What are the name brand printers?

Epson, Star, Citizens, POS-X, and HP all make quality receipt printers. Be conscious of knock-off brands manufactured overseas.

Are receipt printers ?

It depends. If you acquire a backup printer besides the POS system, it won't be plug-and-play -- you will have to install the right drivers so the printer can speak with the computer. If you acquire a pre-configured system from POS Nation, the printer will be plug-and-play.
