How to stop procurement departments from stifling creativity

How to stop procurement departments from stifling creativity Corporates and public sector agencies are experiencing something that could be limiting creativity in design.   Large organisations are becoming more aware of the need to create an investment case and calculate the return on every pound spent. This is why they involve their procurement function in creative pitches, briefs, contracts, and ongoing relationships between their marketing and design teams.   Is this to the detriment or creativity?   Is it possible to commoditise creativity? A procurement team is responsible for finding and purchasing goods or services. Usually, this is done via competitive bidding or tendering.   One procurement professional recently spoke to us.   "We're here for fairness and consistency in agency selection and the process." If you are on a roster it is highly likely that procurement was responsible for its creation.   Rostering is a good thing. They are meant to ensure that everyt

How to become: visual effects designer Design Week: What is a visual effects artist? David Sheldon Hicks: This is a new term.   Although I have always been passionate about animation, I wanted to make graphic designers move. However, when I started training as a graphic artist, motion designer was not a term I had ever heard of.   Although there were some graphic design houses that were animating animation, not many studios could do the same.   They looked great but couldn't move well, or they looked terrible but were technically excellent animators. The internet opened up new possibilities for telling stories, both with graphic design and screen-based work.   This was also the democratization of the Mac which allowed people to create their own animations.   This is what I do now.   There's another level to technical delivery when working with film. Special effects must be part of the story.   We create and design graphic interfaces for vehicle displays, technology screens an

it mean to be a creative producer

Design Week: What does it mean to be a creative producer? Hannah Scally: This is a mixed role. It includes account management, production management, studio management, and project management.   I oversee all aspects of a project throughout its journey through the studio.   I ensure that everything runs smoothly for the client and that the design vision we shared at the beginning is realized in the final product. This role is especially useful for smaller studios where everything is more integrated.   Without that, we don't have separate or siloed roles. Everyone is responsible for the project.   It works well for us to have a central role as creative producer, to oversee everything and ensure it all connects.   It's a great role because it allows you to be at the intersection of all the different parts of the project. DW: What are your educational backgrounds? HS: My undergraduate degree was in English at Trinity College, Dublin.   It was four years of analysis and argumenta

How to be an experience designer Design Week: What does it mean to be an experience designer? Chloe Morris : This involves creative direction, and bringing brands to life and allowing people to experience them. My last job was as a freelancer for Global Bartending, run by Dan Dove.   London Essence was a soda drink and tonic company.   We had a rich perfume history with them. It used to be perfume houses who developed essences in the 1980s. So we kept that in our minds when we created the event.   I looked into every aspect of the brand and key words throughout the design process.   We considered science, perfume, laboratories, carbonation and came up with The Essence House. It is an immersive experience where people can interact directly with the brand and environment. DW: What are your educational backgrounds? CM: I have a BA in product design and interior architecture, as well as an MA in narrative environments from UAL. This is the perfect fit for what I do. My course [narrative
